Llamas at Littletown

Monday 11 July 2011
.
Llamas at New Towne.
In  May I walked the Lea Yeat to Dent section of the Dales Way. As I was replacing a broken way mark on a small log beside the entrance road to New Towne, beside Little Town, I met Daffodil [Daffy] and Snowdrop [Snowy] who wondered what I was doing and came across to inspect my work.
For new readers Daffy and Snowy are two Alpacas, often mistaken for Llamas who belong to the owner of New Towne. We had problems with them last year chasing a group of girls as they were crossing the field. I met the owner as I finished my work and he reaffirmed that the animals had been castrated, to calm them down, and sheared, to make them look less threatening. I was joined by a family with 3 children and the animals were not at all aggressive.
They were however very, very curious. They followed the family and I across the field very close. Friendly close.
I put this item out to reassure nervous walkers that these animals appear to be friendly but curious, and the last thing you should do if they happen to be in the field when you arrive, is take flight as they will then join in the fun. . . . and they are a lot bigger than you.
As Michael Winner might say, “Calm down, and enjoy their company.”
